Looking Beyond BehaviourRecently as a team, we have been considering our approach to children’s behaviour. As adults, rather than ‘managing’ behaviour to ensure conformance to our expectations, we are asking whether it is helpful to see behaviour as evidence of what is going on in each child’s life –

Is she frustrated at her inability to express herself due to her lack of language?

Is he the only child in his family?

Is something going on at home?

In other words, rather than asking ‘What is wrong with you?’ we are asking ‘What has happened to you?’

Our focus is to support our children to understand and regulate their emotions, to provide calm and security and to model social skills. Our ‘little humans’ do need our help, not our judgement and certainly not punishment.
